Custom Homes 101: 3 Tips For Creating A Functional Floor Plan

Construction & Contractors Blog

Designing a custom home is an exciting — albeit stressful — experience. One of the most important decisions you'll need to make when building a custom home is the floor plan or layout. While standard floor plans work for many homeowners, others prefer to design it themselves. If you are wanting to design a floor plan that is all your own, keep these three tips in mind to ensure the design is successful:

1. Future Needs

When building a custom home, you need to think very carefully about the future. While a one-bedroom home may work for you now, it might become cramped in the future. This is why you should always think about additional accommodations. Whether you'll need to help out a family member or your plan to have children, it's always a good idea to build your home with the future in mind. This way you won't need to sell or remodel a few years down the road.

2. Room Orientation

Another helpful tip is to consider how your home will flow. This is especially important for homes with an open floor plan. Since there are no doorways or large walls blocking off the rooms, you'll need to carefully consider how the rooms flow into each other. For example, you don't want to place your kitchen near a bedroom or bathroom. So think carefully and keep similar rooms close to each other to improve the flow of your home.

3. Consider Special Needs

Finally, consider whether your home will need to meet any special needs. Do you have anyone living in the home that needs extra space for a wheel chair? If so, you'll probably want to make hallways and corners wider. Do you have children in your home? If so, you may want to make the bedrooms larger to accommodate bunk beds and a plethora of toys. Is someone in your household very tall? If so, you will probably want to increase the height of the ceilings and doorways.

No matter what, you should always take some time to consider whether your floor plan will need to meet any special needs. This will ensure that you don't need to have expensive adjustments done later.

Designing a good floor plan for your custom home might seem difficult, but it doesn't have to be. With these tips and an experienced custom home builder, you can make designing your floor plan fun and easy. For more information, contact a business such as Hart Homes.

Adding a Man Cave to Your Home: Tips

I have always loved baseball, and when the world series arrives each year, I enjoy inviting my friends over to watch the games. As our family grew, it became difficult for all of our guests to fit in our living room. We decided that we needed a dedicated "man cave" in our home, but we didn't have an extra room to build it in. We thought long and hard about how we could add it, but we finally decided to turn our garage into the man cave and have a carport built onto our home to park our cars under. I have always been interested in learning more handy-work, so I enjoyed watching the contractors build both the man cave and car port. I thought I would start a blog to share what I learned during the building process to help other homeowners!
