Wood Fences Are Still Great

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you look around your neighborhood and notice some of the fences, you might be surprised to realize that most of them are made out of synthetic materials like vinyl and PVC. These products are well suited to fence construction because they are durable, water resistant, and very easy to maintain. But, whatever happened to classic wooden fences? The fact of the matter is, wood is still a great fencing material, even if it is not as popular as it used to be. This article explains a few reasons why you should still consider wood if you are in the market for a new fence.

Wood Can Be Customized

One of the best things about wood is that it is the easiest product to customize. That is, you can apply any stain or finish you want to make your fence look truly unique. The possibilities are definitely and less when it comes to wooden fencing. Where do you want a solid white picket fence with a classic style or an antique finish, you can achieve it with wood. Some people will tell you that wood is a headache because it requires more maintenance.

Obviously, wood will require a little more maintenance than materials like vinyl or PVC, but it is not that much more. In fact, over the entire lifetime of your wooden fence, you might need to repaint it once or twice. But, you might already be wanting to repaint your fence for style reasons. This is actually something that you can't do with PVC or vinyl fences because they don't paint well. Their surfaces are just too smooth to be painted over.

Using Salvaged Lumber

Wooden fences are also great for people who want a rustic look. You simply can't match the style and finish of a naturally-aged wooden fence. Some people even buy salvaged wood fences. These are made out of wood from reclaimed fences or barns. Often, this wood can be hundreds of years old. It is treated and refinished to preserve the antique look.

Homeowners also like these products because they are considered to be eco-friendly. Instead of cutting down more trees to build a new fence, salvaged wood is just recycled, re-purposed wood that would otherwise be thrown away.

It is easy to see what wood is still a great option for residential fencing. It is a durable and reliable product that will always look great in front of any home. Contact a company like W. T. Fary Bros Lumber Co. for more information and assistance.

Adding a Man Cave to Your Home: Tips

I have always loved baseball, and when the world series arrives each year, I enjoy inviting my friends over to watch the games. As our family grew, it became difficult for all of our guests to fit in our living room. We decided that we needed a dedicated "man cave" in our home, but we didn't have an extra room to build it in. We thought long and hard about how we could add it, but we finally decided to turn our garage into the man cave and have a carport built onto our home to park our cars under. I have always been interested in learning more handy-work, so I enjoyed watching the contractors build both the man cave and car port. I thought I would start a blog to share what I learned during the building process to help other homeowners!
